Brooke the Cook

Hi! I'm Brooke, a line cook, home cook, food content creator and pre-med student at Colgate University spreading the joy and wellness that can be found in food!

My go-to healthy food spot: Nu Kitchen

So no, this isn’t a blog all about restaurant reviews, but I do enjoy reviewing my favorite food spots here and there, especially if it’s a place I think deserves particular attention. To me, Nu Kitchen deserves just that.

In my opinion, there is an unfortunate lack of health-focused food joints North of Boston, or at least, an inadequate way to locate them. While there should be some sort of restaurant guide outlining all the health forward restaurants in the area, we don’t have one yet, so I might as well tell you about my personal favorite.

Nu Kitchen is located in the cute yet bustling coastal town of Newburyport, MA, and with all the other eclectic, updated restaurants within it’s not a shock to find Nu here as well.

On a side street off the main drag of State Street you’ll find Nu Kitchen. Trust me, you’ll see it. With it’s lime green hanging sign and modern glass walls there’s no way you’ll miss it. Entering inside, you’ll find an insta-worthy setting. Neon signs, hardwood tables, loads of natural light, stylish seats, you name it.

Along with the gorgeous decor you’ll find a melting pot of personnel. All generations present, some partaking in a casual catchup, others typing contentedly away at their laptops. And to me, that’s exactly what Nu aims to be: a place for all.

For the menu, you’ll find an impressive range of up-to-date, healthy options that won’t break the bank (all their options are roughly between $10-$20). There’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and drink options.

Some food highlights include the refreshing Maui açai bowl that, along with the typical toppings, includes local peanut butter and a homemade superfood fudge. I also love the spicy and crunchy hot cauli salad that comes with sunflower seed crunch, ginger tahini dressing, and sriracha along with loads of fitting produce. But don’t worry traditionalists, familiar favorites have a place on the menu too, like the chicken caesar wrap with roasted chicken and their amped-up BLTs.

For drinks, there’s options to satisfy the juice freak and the caffeine-addicted (that would include me, by the way). While there’s a vast variety of cold-pressed juices and supercharged smoothies, I’m obsessed with their lattes. I love their specialty lattes, like the sweet, luscious carmella latte, or their maple latte sweetened perfectly with maple syrup (both of which I get iced with oat milk, of course). They also have caffeine-free, health-centered lattes like their naturally magenta and just sweet enough beetroot latte that I get iced as well.

But no matter what you choose or where you sit in this friendly, casual café I promise you’ll leave happy. Don’t just take my word for it though, try it for yourself! And while in town, make sure to take in the harbor views, adorable boutiques, and other surrounding eateries. Trust me, NBPT (and Nu Kitchen specifically), is not to be missed.
